Visual theme and symbols
The graphics used for NetEnt’s Rise of Maya is, no surprise here, Mayan based. From a visual point of view, Rise of Maya doesn’t boast of high quality visuals, but the overall look is neat. Symbols shown on the reels include 4 types of wilds, scatter, 5 different Mayan masks, the usual royal suites. The highest valued Mayan mask symbol offers upto 250 times the stake, and players can achieve this win by having the symbol displayed across all 5 reels.
The wild symbols are one single serpent, two serpents and serpent stacks.
Free Spins feature
The Free Spins feature for Rise of Maya is pretty straightforward. Get 3 or more wild symbols across any reels and the Free Spins feature is activated, starting with 15 free spins. The reels which activated the Free Spins feature will act as hot reels for the remainder of the feature. If serpent stacks land on these hot reels, a full wild reel will be activated. A player can go upto 24 additional free spins.
Scatter Nudge feature
Now this particular feature is an interesting one. If a player doesn’t achieve a win during a normal or free spins mode, the Scatter Nudge is activated randomly. The wild and scatter symbols are nudged to other reels, giving the player an opportunity to get a winning combination or win additional spins.
Rise of Maya also offers a Bonus Bet feature – Second Change Scatter. In this feature, the player gets the chance to activate or deactivate it in the first game. Once this feature is activated, the stakes would double and with extra wild symbols and scatter coming into play, the chances of activating a Free Spins feature with hot reels. If the players lands 2 wilds or scatters on the reels, it would re-spin for a second time.
Now let’s take a closer look at the online slot game. At 00:12, we can see the player activating the Second Change Scatter feature. From 00:19 onwards, we can see that the player has hot reels enabled on reels number 1, 2 and 5. It then switches to reel number 4. With 3 wild symbols displayed, we can see the reels disappearing and the mouth of the Mayan statue opening, showing 15 Free Spins.
Now that the Free Spin feature is activated, the player is taken to a separate section of reels where the entire Free Spin session is played out. At 01:09, we see the plater winning big with 135 coins. At 01:20, we see the expanding serpent wild symbol as well.
When compared to other NetEnt titles, Rise of Maya is a basic online slot game that offers very little in terms of visuals and overall game experience. With a medium variance of 96.4%, this online slot game will struggle to attract players unless they specifically want a Mayan themed slot game. And that’s highly unlikely. NetEnt’s Rise of Maya doesn’t offer anything special and this release can be considered as a case of confused identity.
